What Are NMFC Codes and Why Do They Exist?
The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system is a standardized freight classification framework maintained by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA). Established in 1936, NMFC codes assign every type of commercially shipped commodity to one of 18 freight classes ranging from Class 50 to Class 500. These classes determine pricing in the LTL industry — the higher the class, the higher the per-hundredweight (CWT) rate.
The system exists because not all freight costs the same to move. A pallet of dense steel castings and a pallet of empty cardboard boxes both weigh 500 lbs but couldn't be more different from a carrier's perspective. The steel fits efficiently in a trailer and is easy to handle; the cardboard takes up enormous space, requires careful stacking, and may be difficult to load around. NMFC classification attempts to quantify this difference systematically so that rates reflect the actual cost of carrying each commodity type.
The Four Classification Factors
Every commodity's NMFC class is determined by four factors. Understanding these factors is essential for correctly classifying your freight and preventing disputes:
- Density: The weight of the shipment divided by its cubic volume (lbs per cubic foot). This is the dominant factor for most commodities. Higher density = lower class = lower rate.
- Stowability: How easily the freight can be loaded alongside other freight in a trailer. Hazardous materials, unusually shaped items, and freight that cannot be stacked over are harder to stow and receive higher classes.
- Handling: How difficult the freight is to load and unload. Items requiring special equipment, prone to shifting, or packaged in ways that make forklift handling difficult receive higher classes.
- Liability: The risk of damage or theft associated with the commodity. High-value, fragile, or theft-prone goods receive higher classifications reflecting the carrier's increased liability exposure.

How to Calculate Freight Density
Density is the most important factor for most commercial shipments. Here's the calculation:
Step 2: Divide by 1,728 to convert to cubic feet
Step 3: Divide the total weight (lbs) by cubic feet
Example: 48" × 40" × 48" pallet weighing 500 lbs
Volume = (48 × 40 × 48) / 1,728 = 92,160 / 1,728 = 53.3 cubic feet
Density = 500 lbs / 53.3 cu ft = 9.4 lbs/cu ft → Class 100
Always measure the actual loaded dimensions of your pallet — including any overhang, protective packaging, or framing. Carriers measure at the widest point. A pallet that extends slightly over the edge due to a protruding handle can meaningfully increase the cubic volume calculation.
How Carriers Reclassify Freight
Reclassification occurs when a carrier's inspector determines that the freight class you declared on the BOL doesn't match the actual shipment. The carrier will issue a reclassification notice with an adjusted freight bill. Common triggers include:
- Dimensional discrepancy: The actual pallet dimensions are larger than declared, reducing density below the threshold for the declared class
- Weight discrepancy: Reweigh at the carrier's dock shows a different weight than the BOL
- Commodity mismatch: The declared commodity description doesn't match the actual goods, and the correct NMFC code falls in a higher class
- Packaging change: The same item packaged differently (e.g., fully assembled vs. knocked down) may qualify for a different NMFC code at a lower class
Major LTL carriers including Old Dominion Freight Line, Saia LTL Freight, XPO Freight, and FedEx Freight all have inspection teams that audit shipments at terminals. High-volume shippers in disputed commodity categories are often inspected routinely.
The Financial Impact of Reclassification
Reclassification can be financially severe. Moving from Class 70 to Class 150 can double the freight charge on the same shipment. Moving from Class 100 to Class 250 can triple it. A 500-lb shipment originally quoted at $180 (Class 70) could generate a revised invoice of $540 (Class 250) after reclassification — plus a reweigh charge of $15–$25.
For high-volume shippers, undeclared class errors compound across hundreds of shipments. A single recurring classification error on a commodity shipped 200 times per month can result in tens of thousands of dollars in unexpected charges before anyone notices the pattern.
How to Prevent Reclassification: 6 Best Practices
- Look up the official NMFC code — use the NMFTA's ClassIT tool or SMC3's LTLExpert to get the authoritative code for your specific commodity and packaging type
- Measure accurately and consistently — measure every pallet to the widest point including packaging. Build a library of standard SKU dimensions for repeat shipments
- Describe commodities specifically on the BOL — "machine parts" is vague and invites scrutiny; "stamped steel brackets, SKU #XZ-402" is auditable
- Use knocked-down or nested packaging when possible — many commodities have different (lower) NMFC classes when packaged in nested or KD form versus set-up
- Consider density-based pricing (DBP) — carriers like Old Dominion offer DBP as an alternative to class-based pricing. If your freight consistently falls in a disputed density range, DBP eliminates the reclassification risk entirely
- Negotiate FAK (Freight All Kinds) agreements — high-volume shippers can negotiate FAK pricing with their carriers, assigning all commodities to a flat agreed-upon class (e.g., "all freight bills as Class 70") regardless of actual NMFC. This eliminates reclassification risk on covered commodities
How to Dispute a Reclassification Charge
If you believe a reclassification was incorrect, you have the right to dispute it. The process:
- Request the carrier's inspection report and reweigh/re-measure documentation
- Pull the original BOL, photos of the freight at pickup, and your own measurement records
- Submit a formal written dispute to the carrier's claims or billing department with supporting evidence
- If unresolved, escalate to the carrier's rate department or a freight audit firm like Cass Information Systems, nVoicePay, or PayCargo that handles dispute management as a service
- For significant amounts, consider arbitration through the NMFTA or a transportation attorney
Dispute resolution rates are higher than most shippers expect — carriers routinely accept corrections on well-documented disputes, particularly when the shipper provides consistent measurement records that contradict the carrier's inspection findings.
